Outreach Intern with Interfaith Ministries.
My name is Marissa Garibay. I will be graduating from UNT in December with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Sciences. Part of the requirements were to complete an Internship and I am so glad I chose Interfaith Ministries of Denton as my internship site!
I learned about Interfaith through Facebook. After researching a little bit more about what they did, I knew this would be a great experience for me. I wanted to intern at IFM because I loved how small and close-knit this organization was. I also thought their mission was very important, especially in the Denton community, where many people are just one bill away from becoming homeless.
My role at IFM was to work as an Outreach Intern with Ernestina Lopez, the Director in Community & Development. Over the past semester, I have learned so much. The most important thing I learned was that non-profit organizations must work as a team in order to fulfill their mission. Many different people are involved in non-profits such as the Executive Director, Staff, Volunteers, and the Board of Directors. It takes commitment from each of these individuals to get the job done. I also realized that the relationships you have with your donors and sponsors are extremely important. I learned how to use different programs to create flyers, postcards, and newsletters to help spread information about upcoming events and ways others can help Interfaith.
My favorite part about interning at Interfaith was actually stepping out of my comfort zone and interacting with the community on North Texas Giving Day at the Denton Square.
My experience at Interfaith Ministries of Denton is a great start to my future career! I will carry all of the knowledge I learned with me into my next position. I appreciate IFM for taking me in, teaching me about their organization, and letting me be a part of their journey!
