February Happenings

Denton in February is a busy time! The month comes with a host of activities to enjoy with your family. We’ve compiled a list of ones that are completely FREE. So check them out and let us know which ones you plan to attend!

Chess Night

When: Mondays in February from 6 PM to 8:45 PM

Where: North Branch Library, Denton TX

So What? Players of all ages and all skill levels are welcome to this free weekly chess night where you can hone your skills and meet other chess enthusiasts!

Come out to the North Branch Library for Chess Night!

3D Printer Orientation

When: February 1 and February 15 from 7-8 PM

Where: North Branch Library, Denton TX

So What? Learn about 3D printing and get certified for using the Library’s 3D printer. Registration required. Register at 940-349-8752 or www.dentonlibrary.com.

Live Jazz at the Greenhouse

When: Monday nights from 10 PM onward.

Where: 600 N. Locust St., Denton TX

So What? The Greenhouse presents live jazz every Monday evening.

Open Mic Night at LSA Burger

When: Monday evenings from 7-10 PM

Where: LSA Burger has an open mic night every Monday evening. See the talent or show yours off!

So What? Monday nights are Open Mic night at LSA Burger! From 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. anyone can come out and enjoy the talent Denton has to offer or show off your talent on the LSA stage!

Mother Goose Time

When: Tuesdays in February at 9:30 AM

Where: South Branch Library, 3228 Teasley Lane, Denton TX

So What? Bring your baby to these classes promoting infant and caregiver bonding through stories, songs, and activities. This free story time is for infants up to 18 months and their caregivers.

Anime Club

When: Tuesdays in February at 7 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? If you love anime, then come on up to the North Branch Library and meet up with other like-minded teens and young adults. Each week there will be an anime viewing and discussion in a casual setting. This free event is for high school students and college students.

Teen Writer’s Group

When: Tuesdays in February at 7 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What: Come on out to the North Branch Library for the Teen Writers Group! Come meet other writers to discuss story ideas, give and get tips on writings, explore writing prompts and share your work. This free program is for ages 11-17.

Writer’s Critique Group

When: Tuesdays in February at 7 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? If you write fiction or creative non-fiction, check out this group. For ages 17+. This program is free and doesn’t require registration.

 

Real Texas Radio Live Broadcast

When: Tuesdays in February from 7-9 PM

Where: 113 West Hickory Street

So What? Every Tuesday night from7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Real Texas Radio has a live broadcast from LSA Burger on the Downtown Denton Square.

Boxcar Bandits at Mulberry St. Cantina

When: Tuesday nights from 11 PM to 1 AM

Where: Mulberry St. Cantina, 110 Mulberry St., Denton

So What? Boxcar Bandits play every Tuesday night at Mulberry Street Cantina! Come out to enjoy a drink and great local music.

Movie Night at II Charlies

When: Wednesday evenings in February at 10:30 PM

Where: 809 Sunset St., Denton.

So What? II Charlie’s hosts a free move night on their patio beginning at 10:30 PM

County Rexford at the Abbey Inn

When: Every Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM

Where: The Abbey Inn, 101 W Hickory

So What? County Rexford plays at The Abbey Inn every Wednesday at 7:30!

Wednesday Night Social Run

When: Wednesday evenings in February at 7 PM

Where: Oak St. Drafthouse, 308 East Oak Street

So What? A free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 6:45, and the run starts at 7:00. Join in on the fun! 

Yoga Wednesdays

When: Wednesdays in February, 8:30 AM

Where: Golden Triangle Mall

So What? Twisted Bodies is offering FREE YOGA classes every Wednesday morning at the mall near the food court area. Bring a mat and join us at 8:30AM for a little Namaste to start your day!

STEM Lab

When: February 3 and 17 at 4:30 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? If you like to build things or what to know what an engineer does, then come on out to the Denton North Branch Library for STEM Lab! Join the Brain STEMS from the UNT Society of Women Engineers for snacks and fun, and learn about science and engineering! This program is best for ages 8-14.

Exploring Philosophy

When: Wednesdays in February from 7-8:30 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? This on-going, in-depth discussion of philosophy, which takes place every Wednesday from 7-8:30pm, is led by Dr. Eva H. Cadwallader. The discussion group is free to attend. Come on out to the North Branch Library for Exploring Philosophy!

Homeschool Coding Club

When: Thursdays in February from 2-4 PM

Where: The Forge at North Branch Library

So What? Learn how to code, collaborate on coding projects, and help others learn to code at this primarily self-directed, weekly gathering. All skill levels and coding languages welcome. This free club is for ages 8-17.

Open Mic at Audacity

When: Thursdays in February from 7 to 10 PM

Where: Audacity Brew House, 1012 shady Oaks Dr., Denton TX

So What? Join us at Audacity for a musical Open Mic night! Always free to play, never a cover charge. Sign up starts at 6:45, music runs from 7 to 10pm.

Trivia Night

When: Thursdays in February, 7:30 PM

Where: Mulberry St. Cantina

So What? Join us for a fun night of trivia game play. Create a team and win prizes. 

Saturday Arts and Crafts Fair

When: Second Saturdays in February from 2-6 PM

Where: Mulberry St. Cantina, 110 Mulberry St. Denton

So What? Mulberry Street Cantina hosts an indoor community market every Saturday at 2:00 P.M. It’s a wonderful way to meet and greet your local vendors, crafters and artists. Stop by and shop for some unique gifts or items for the house. It’s a kid and family friendly environment. Shop local while having a tasty margarita or craft beer.

Afternoons at Audacity

When: Saturdays in February from 3-7 PM

Where: Audacity Brew House, 1012 Shady Oaks Dr., Denton TX

So What? Cold beer and hot tunes, every Saturday afternoon at Audacity Brew House.
Brewery tours at 3 and 7pm (always free)

Jazz Brunch

When: Saturdays in February at 10 AM

Where: The Chestnut Tree, 107 W Hickory St.

So What? The Chestnut Tree hosts a Jazz Brunch on weekly on Saturdays! Enjoy some delicious bistro food and great jazz music.

Materials Hard and Soft

When: Saturdays and Sundays in February, 1-5 PM

Where: 400 E. Hickory St., Denton TX

So What? Join us at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts for the annual “Materials Hard and Soft” National Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. The exhibition will be on display from Feb. 6th, 2016 to April 1, 2016.

Open Mic with Bone Doggie

When: Sundays in February at 9 PM

Where: The Abbey Underground, West Walnut St.

So What? Bone Doggie’s Open Mic Showcase at the Abbey Underground at 9:00 p.m.

 Karma Yoga

 When: Sundays in February at 10 AM

Where: Audacity Brew House, 1012 Shady Oaks Drive

So What? Yoga fans of all levels are welcome to enjoy free yoga taught by teacher trainees and bring a canned good to benefit the Denton Community Food Center.

Free Roll Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament

When: Sundays in February at 6 PM

Where: 508 S. Elm St, Denton TX

So What? Every Sunday there will be Free Roll Texas Hold Em Tournament at Jack’s Tavern in Denton. Free entertainment for all poker lovers. This is a free roll. It is free to play and you earn the chance to win cash prizes.

10th Annual 125-Mile Visual Arts Exhibition

When: Tuesdays-Fridays in February from 11 Am to 5 Pm

Where: 400 W Hickory St., Denton TX

So What? Presented by the Visual Arts Society of Texas, this regional exhibition features works from artists within a 125-mile radius of Denton.

Amazing YA Book Club:

When: Feb. 2 at 7 Pm

Where: Emily fowler Library

So What? All grown up, but still love reading young adult books? Come on out to the Emily Fowler Library for the Amazing YA Book Club discuss young adult books with other adult fans. Don’t miss the Amazing YA Book Club: Seriously Wicked by Tina Connolly!

Preschool Music Class

When: Feb. 3 from 10 AM to 10:30 AM

Where: South Branch Library

So What? Come on out to the South Branch Library for the Preschool Music Class! Music is a great way to influence your child’s development positively, and to help get them excited about learning! These classes will teach children about literacy, independence, early language, and music! This program is for children ages 1-5. Registration is required.

Read to Rover

When: Feb. 3 from 4:30 to 5:30 PM

Where: Emily Fowler Library

So What? Children ages 6-11 who are reading on their own have the opportunity to practice their reading skills one-on-one with a certified therapy dog. The Read to Rover program is made possible through a partnership with Therapy Pals of Golden Triangle. Registration is required as space is limited. You can register by calling 940-349-8752.

iPad Basics for Beginners

When: Feb 3 at 7 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? Practice along with the instructor as we explore how to navigate, customize settings, surf the internet with Safari, and manage apps. Please bring your own iPad.

Death and Desserts Mystery Book Club

When: Feb. 4 at 7 PM

Where: Emily Fowler Library

So What? If you love mysterious deaths, intellectual puzzles, and delicious sweets, look no further! Desserts are served at this book club that takes place the first Thursday of each month. This month’s book theme is Senior Sleuths! Come on out to the Emily Fowler Library for Death and Desserts Mystery Book Club – Senior Sleuths and discover new authors to feed your mystery habit. Stay tuned for next month’s theme! You won’t want to miss it!

Pete the Cat Story Time

When: Feb. 5 at 11 AM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? The world’s coolest cat is coming to the North Branch Library so kids can snap their fingers and get groovy! This free program is best for ages 1-5.

First Friday Denton

When: February 5, 6-9 PM

Where: Denton Courthouse-on-the-Square

So What? Experience Denton’s art scene in many forms on First Friday. Businesses and galleries will have activities throughout the evening between the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., with hours varying. It’s a great way to stroll through downtown, experience and observe local art activities.

Love Me, Love Me Not Poetry Open Mic Night

When: February 5, 5:30-8:30 PM

Where: 115 S Elm St.

So What? The Artists Enclave of Denton County presents Love Me, Love Me Not: An Evening of Poems About Adoration & Heartache Friday, February 5th hosted by World Poetry Slam Champion, Joaquin Zihuatanejo. Sign up for the open mic starts at 5:30 PM. While poems about adoration and heartache are welcomed, poems on other themes will be offered as well. Come out to enjoy Sweetwater, some of the best local poetry Denton, Dallas, and Fort Worth have to offer, see a dynamic short film and hear more about the Thin Line Fest from Festival Director, Joshua Butler. What is the Scientific Method?

When: February 6, 2-4 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? Curious about science? Learn what the scientific method is and how to use it from Anna Pechenina, a PhD candidate at UNT.

Storytelling Time

When: Feb. 9 at 11 AM

Where: South Branch Library

So What? Children will learn about character development and setting as they learn storytelling skills at the North Branch Library at Storytelling Time! This free program is best for ages 3-6.

Chocolate Olympics

When: Feb. 9 at 4 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? Bring your appetite and your skills to battle in the Library Chocolate Olympics! Participants will compete in different games such as chocolate trivia, chocolate art, and more. This free program is for ages 10-17. Registration is required.

STEAM Ahead

When: Feb. 9 at 4 PM

Where: South Branch Library

So What? Come on down to the South Branch Library for STEAM Ahead! Come explore, create, experiment, and discover science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities. This program is for ages 8-11. Registration is required.

MS Access 2013 Workshop

When: Feb. 10 from 2-4 PM

Where: South Branch Library

So What? Come out to the South Branch Library for the 2-part MS Access 2013 workshop! An overview of the popular database program for organizing large or small amounts of data. Participants must be able to use a mouse and save and retrieve files in Windows, and be familiar with Excel.

Basic DNA and Family History

When: Feb. 11 from 6:30 to 8:30

Where: Emily Fowler Library

So What? Come explore genealogy with fellow genealogists at the Emily Fowler Library each month! This month the meeting will explore Basic DNA and Family History led by Perry Abernathy.

LEGO Builders Club

When: Feb. 12 at 4:30

Where: Emily Fowler Library

So What? Come on out to the Emily Fowler Library for the LEGO Builders Club! Drop in and get creative with all of the library’s LEGOs! All the LEGOS are provided. Please do not bring your own. This free program is for ages 6+!

Honey Run II

When: Feb. 13 at 9 AM

Where: 3310 Collins Rd., Denton TX

So What? It’s time for Honey Run 2016, and this year could be a sticky situation! Run with your honey or fly solo on the trails at Clear Creek. The first 125 participants to arrive get a free, limited edition Honey Run t-shirt!

Thin Line Photography Festival

When: Feb. 17- Feb. 22, 11 AM-5 PM

Where: 400 E Hickory St., Denton TX

So What? The 2016 Thin Line Photography Exhibit is a competitive and curated festival, which will showcase the best and most promising talent in Texas and beyond. Selected artists will have their work displayed in print and digital galleries featuring works in the 2016 categories of Natural Beauty, It’s About People, What Moves Us, There’s a Thin Line, and Zef. Additionally, the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center will also host Thin Line educational workshops and local film screenings including a visual history of Denton, Texas 2015 called “Our Town: Denton.”

The 9th Annual Thin Line documentary Film Fest will take place at Campus Theater February 17-22, 2016. Thin Line will show one-of-a-kind documentaries from around the world at affordable prices. Designing with Publisher 2013

When: Feb. 25 from 1:30-3 PM

Where: North Branch Library

So What? Learn how to set up a document and use the features in Microsoft Publisher 2013 too design newsletters, fliers, and other communication pieces. Thirteen desktop computers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional registrants can being laptops with Publisher 2013 installed.
