Watercolors by Dorothy Bertine
When: Throughout September 2015
Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, 110 West Hickory Street
So What? Dorothy Bertine, a native of Southern Oklahoma, is an artist known for her works in watercolor. Her art follows the California Watercolor School of painting developed in the first half of the 20th Century. Her studies in watercolor include nature scenes and historic houses. Dorothy Bertine received her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Texas Woman’s University and she resides in Denton. Her work is inspired by the architecture of the historic homes in Denton, and many of these artworks will be featured in this exhibit.
Cosmic Visions: Works by John Calabrese
When: Throughout September 2015
Where: Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts, 400 East Hickory Street, Denton, TX
So What? The Greater Denton Arts Council invites you to explore Cosmic Visions, an exhibition of over thirty original graphite works by John Calabrese. Beneath their classically calm beauty and romantic atmosphere, Calabrese’s drawings depict figures in surroundings that are realistic and appealing to basic human instincts.
Dr. John Calabrese received his PhD in Comparative Arts from Ohio University and a MFA in Painting and Art History from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He is currently Professor of Art History at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.
Boxcar Bandits at Mulberry St. Cantina
When: Monday nights from 11 PM to 1 AM
Where: Mulberry St. Cantina, 110 Mulberry St., Denton
So What? Boxcar Bandits play every Monday night at Mulberry Street Cantina! Come out to enjoy a drink and great local music.
Denton Farmer’s Market
When: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 7 AM until sellout
Where: 420 West Sycamore St.
So What? Local farmers sell fresh produce, including tomatoes, honeydew melon, peppers, potatoes, green beans, peaches, strawberries, and more.
Wednesday Night Social Run
When: Wednesday evenings in September at 7 PM
Where: Oak St. Drafthouse, 308 East Oak Street
So What? A free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 6:45, and the run starts at 7:00. Join in on the fun!
DentonRadio.com at LSA Burger
When: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in September from 7-10 PM
Where: 113 West Hickory Street
So What? Local musicians perform at LSA Burger courtesy of DentonRadio.com every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Acts like Ellie Meyer, Ed Vargas, and more take the stage.
Jazz at the Whitehouse
When: Wednesdays in September from 8-10:30 PM
Where: 424 Bryan Street, Denton TX
So What? A different jazz artist performs every Wednesday evening at the Whitehouse. There is no cover charge for enjoying the great music.
Open Mic at Audacity
When: Thursdays in September from 7 to 10 PM
Where: Audacity Brew House, 1012 shady Oaks Dr., Denton TX
So What? Join us at Audacity for a musical Open Mic night! Always free to play, never a cover charge. Sign up starts at 6:45, music runs from 7 to 10pm.
When: Friday evenings in September at 8 PM
Where: La Milpa, 820 S Interstate East
So What? A mariachi band performs every Friday night. There’s no cover charge. Enjoy the live music!
Karaoke at Muddy Jake’s
When: Fridays in September at 8 PM
Where: Muddy Jake’s, 222 West Hickory St., Denton TX
So What? Every Friday night at Muddy Jake’s is karaoke night.
Denton Community Market
When: Saturdays in September from 9 AM-1 PM
Where: Denton County Historical Park, West Mulberry Street
So What? This weekly community market hosts local produce and art vendors as well as on-site food and music. Community groups and local businesses will also be present. More information is at dentonmarket.org
Saturday Arts and Crafts Fair
When: Second Saturdays in September from 2-6 PM
Where: Mulberry St. Cantina, 110 Mulberry St. Denton
So What? Mulberry Street Cantina hosts an indoor community market every Saturday at 2:00 P.M. It’s a wonderful way to meet and greet your local vendors, crafters and artists. Stop by and shop for some unique gifts or items for the house. It’s a kid and family friendly environment. Shop local while having a tasty margarita or craft beer.

So What? Yoga fans of all levels are welcome to enjoy free yoga taught by teacher trainees and bring a canned good to benefit the Denton Community Food Center.

Arts, Antiques, and Autos Extravaganza
When: Saturday September 12 from 9 AM to 3 PM
Where: Downtown Denton Square
So What? Show off your custom and classic cars, get your family heirlooms appraised, enjoy chalk art and live music in downtown Denton. Find entry forms here.
Emergency Preparedness Fair
When: Saturday September 12 from 10 AM to 1 PM
Where: Denton Civic Center
So What: September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of Denton Fire Department (DFD) is hosting a Public Safety Day & Emergency Preparedness Fair to show residents how to prepare for the various types of hazards that can impact the North Central Texas region. Fire and police vehicles, CareFlite and Texas DPS helicopters, and other emergency equipment will be on display in the Civic Center parking lot.
North Texas Giving Day
When: Thursday, September 17 from 6 AM to 12 AM
Where: Downtown Denton Square
So What? Denton County North Texas Giving Day Celebration will be an opportunity to celebrate the Denton County nonprofits and give everyone a chance to get up and give to the nonprofit of their choice. There will be live music from Raised Right Men, activities for kids and a pet photo booth. Come out and join the fun and celebrate North Texas Giving Day on September 17th!
Denton Blues Fest
When: September 19 and 20
Where: Quakertown Park, Denton TX
So What? The Denton Black Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their annual Denton Blues Fest. Come out and join the fun. We will have music for everyone, and a bounce house for the kids.
Dog Days of Denton
When: September 26, 9 AM-3 PM
Where: 2217 N. Carroll, Denton TX
So What? During festival hours, attendees can enjoy a canine couture fashion show , live entertainment, demos and performances by canines and their trainers, “Glamfur” photos, canine contests, arts and craft vendors, pet care information, pet rescue groups and fantastic festival foods.
With this many things going on in Denton this month, your schedule is going to be full. However, we can’t think of a better time to take a moment and enjoy all that our beautiful city has to offer.
