JULY HAPPENINGS

Denton in July is a busy time!. July comes with a host of activities to enjoy with your family. We’ve compiled a list of ones that are completely FREE. So check them out and let us know which ones you plan to attend!

Watercolors by Dorothy Bertine

When: Throughout July 2015

Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, 110 West Hickory Street

So What? Dorothy Bertine, a native of Southern Oklahoma, is an artist known for her works in watercolor. Her art follows the California Watercolor School of painting developed in the first half of the 20th Century. Her studies in watercolor include nature scenes and historic houses. Dorothy Bertine received her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Texas Woman’s University and she resides in Denton. Her work is inspired by the architecture of the historic homes in Denton, and many of these artworks will be featured in this exhibit.

 

Woodturning: Traditional to Modern

When: Until July 28, 2015

Where: Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts, 400 East Hickory Street

So What? The Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts will host recent works by Golden Triangle Woodturners with a free opening reception on June 12.

 

Denton Farmer’s Market

When: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 7 AM until sellout

Where: 420 West Sycamore St.

So What? Local farmers sell fresh produce, including tomatoes, honeydew melon, peppers, potatoes, green beans, peaches, strawberries, and more.

 

Wednesday Night Social Run

When: Wednesday evenings in July at 7 PM

Where: Oak St. Drafthouse, 308 East Oak Street

So What? A free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 6:45, and the run starts at 7:00. Join in on the fun! 

 

DentonRadio.com at LSA Burger

When: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in July from 7-10 PM

Where: 113 West Hickory Street

So What? Local musicians perform at LSA Burger courtesy of DentonRadio.com every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Acts like Ellie Meyer, Ed Vargas, and more take the stage.

 

Jazz at the Whitehouse

When: Wednesdays in July from 8-10:30 PM

Where: 424 Bryan Street, Denton TX

So What? A different jazz artist performs every Wednesday evening at the Whitehouse. There is no cover charge for enjoying the great music.

 

Mariachi Quetzal

When: Friday evenings in July at 8 PM

Where: La Milpa, 820 S Interstate East

So What? A mariachi band performs every Friday night. There’s no cover charge. Enjoy the live music!

 

Denton Community Market

When: Saturdays in July from 9 AM-1 PM

Where: Denton County Historical Park, West Mulberry Street

So What? This weekly community market hosts local produce and art vendors as well as on-site food and music. Community groups and local businesses will also be present. More information is at dentonmarket.org

 

 Karma Yoga

 When: Sundays in July at 10 AM

Where: Audacity Brew House, 1012 Shady Oaks Drive

So What? Yoga fans of all levels are welcome to enjoy free yoga taught by teacher trainees and bring a canned good to benefit the Denton Community Food Center.

 

Trivia Night

When: Thursdays in July, 7:30 PM

Where: Mulberry St. Cantina

So What? Join us for a fun night of trivia game play. Create a team and win prizes. 

 

Twilight Tunes

When: Thursdays in July, 6:30-8 PM

Where: Downtown Denton Courthouse on the Square

So What? Bring your friends and family, get a meal-to-go from one of the many downtown eateries, bring a blanket or chairs, and enjoy an evening of great live music as the sun sets over downtown Denton.  The 2015 series offers an eclectic assortment of music for all listeners.  Thursday Twilight Tunes is the perfect way to kick off the weekend early and listen to some of the best local bands in the Denton area.

 

Lil’ D Summer Gardening Camp

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays in July, 8:30-10:30 AM

Where: Calhoun Middle School

So What?
Attend any or all days

July First Friday

When: July 3 from 6-9 PM

Where: Downtown Denton Square

So What? Stores and restaurants in downtown Denton will be open late for the monthly First Friday event. Sales, specials, and live music are all planned!



Other Visions: Ten Short Films

When: July 1-2, 2015

Where: tAd Gallery, 901 Avenue C, Denton

So What? This exhibition features 10 outstanding short films selected from the juried competition organized by The 13th Festival of Film Animation in Czech Republic. For more info, please visit the tAd Gallery webpage. 

Life Through the Lens

When: Until July 22

Where: UNT on the Square, Denton

So What? A photography exhibit from Joe Clark and Junebug Clark.

 

Mick Burson Mural Opening Reception 

When: July 1, 5 PM

Where: SCRAP Denton, 420 S. Bell

So What? Keep Denton Beautiful, Inc. and SCRAP have collaborated on a beautification project that resulted in some amazing public art from local artist Mick Burson. Please join us for the official unveiling and reception to celebrate the partnership and SCRAP’s new, beautiful mural.

4th of July Family Fun Jamboree

When: July 4, 9 AM

Where: Quakertown Park

So What?

9 AM-Registration begins
9:30 AM-Flag ceremony and live entertainment begins. Entry drop-off begins for the kid's arts and crafts show. Entries will be displayed from 11 AM-Noon at the Civic Center.
10 AM-Noon-Free kids carnival
11 AM-Family fun begins, senior luncheon ($3/person), music by the Young at Heart Band
Noon-6 PM-Civic Center Pool, $1/person

Kiwanis Fireworks Show

When: July 4, 6:30 PM

Where: Apogee Stadium

So What? It’s Denton County’s most spectacular night, and has been for over forty years! UNT’s beautiful new Apogee Stadium is the place for live music, followed by an awesome array of fireworks that light up the sky. The event is FREE, but donations are gladly accepted by our energetic “Bucket Brigade” before, during, and after the show.
 

Ice Cream Crank-Off

When: July 18, 11 AM-2 PM

Where: 100-115 west Walnut St.

So What? Individuals, families and teams make their favorite ice cream using, manual or electric ice cream makers to vie for the Grand Prize, People’s Choice and North of Ordinary prizes. Fun, prizes and braggin’ rights – music and more to beat the heat.
 

With this many things going on in Denton this month, your schedule is going to be full. However, we can’t think of a better time to take a moment and enjoy all that our beautiful city has to offer.
