Denton has tons of activities for the month before things get warm. May comes with a host of activities to enjoy with your family. We’ve compiled a list of ones that are completely FREE. So check them out and let us know which ones you plan to attend!

Made in Denton County

When: Throughout May 2015

Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, 110 West Hickory Street

So What? Through the month of May, the Denton County Office of History and Culture is sponsoring “Made in Denton County”, a museum exhibit featuring products made here in Denton County! The way that a community’s identity and character are perceived can be strongly connected to what a place makes or produces. This exhibit will be provided in English and Spanish. A hands-on corner will provide children with tangible learning through interactive activities and creative play. The west gallery theater room will be screening various “How It’s Made” videos that feature the local companies in the exhibit. 

Merging Visions 2015

When: May 1-28 2015

Where: Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts

So What?  This exhibition consists of art and poetry produced by poets from the Denton Poets’ Assembly (DPA) and art by artists of the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST). The 2015 exhibit marks the eighth year that DPA and VAST have collaborated to present this exhibit in the spring to celebrate National Poetry Month and showcase the visual, written, and spoken arts in the community. There are 62 participants including 24 poets and 38 artists in the exhibit.

Watercolors by Dorothy Bertine

When: Throughout May 2015

Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, 110 West Hickory Street

So What? Dorothy Bertine, a native of Southern Oklahoma, is an artist known for her works in watercolor. Her art follows the California Watercolor School of painting developed in the first half of the 20th Century. Her studies in watercolor include nature scenes and historic houses. Dorothy Bertine received her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Texas Woman’s University and she resides in Denton. Her work is inspired by the architecture of the historic homes in Denton, and many of these artworks will be featured in this exhibit.

Wednesday Night Social Run

When: Wednesday evenings in May at 7 PM

Where: Oak St. Drafthouse, 308 East Oak Street

So What? A free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 6:45, and the run starts at 7:00. Join in on the fun! 

My Revolution Journal

When: Until May 22, 2015

Where: tAd Gallery, 901 Avenue C #101

So What? Denton’s tAd Gallery presents “My Revolution Journal”, which presents a series of 18 photographs by an emerging artist-photographer in Hong Kong name Kevin Cheng. His work captures the making of a new “umbrella generation,” a young generation whose new pride of political solidarity and identity has emerged from their leading role and active participation in the 2014 political protest in Hong Kong. at LSA Burger

When: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in May from 7-10 PM

Where: 113 West Hickory Street

So What? Local musicians perform at LSA Burger courtesy of every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Acts like Ellie Meyer, Ed Vargas, and more take the stage.

Jazz at the Whitehouse

When: Wednesdays in May from 8-10:30 PM

Where: 424 Bryan Street, Denton TX

So What? A different jazz artist performs every Wednesday evening at the Whitehouse. There is no cover charge for enjoying the great music.

Mariachi Quetzal

When: Friday evenings in May at 8 PM

Where: La Milpa, 820 S Interstate East

So What? A mariachi band performs every Friday night. There’s no cover charge. Enjoy the live music!

Denton Community Market

When: Saturdays in May from 9 AM-1 PM

Where: Denton County Historical Park, West Mulberry Street

So What? This weekly community market hosts local produce and art vendors as well as on-site food and music. Community groups and local businesses will also be present. More information is at

 Karma Yoga

 When: Sundays in May at 10 AM

Where: Audacity Brew House, 1012 Shady Oaks Drive

So What? Yoga fans of all levels are welcome to enjoy free yoga taught by teacher trainees and bring a canned good to benefit the Denton Community Food Center.

Trivia Night

When: Thursdays in May, 7:30 PM

Where: Mulberry St. Cantina

So What? Join us for a fun night of trivia game play. Create a team and win prizes. 

Twilight Tunes

When: Thursdays in May, 6:30-8 PM

Where: Downtown Denton Courthouse on the Square

So What? Bring your friends and family, get a meal-to-go from one of the many downtown eateries, bring a blanket or chairs, and enjoy an evening of great live music as the sun sets over downtown Denton.  The 2015 series offers an eclectic assortment of music for all listeners.  Thursday Twilight Tunes is the perfect way to kick off the weekend early and listen to some of the best local bands in the Denton area.

May First Friday

When: May 1 from 6-9 PM

Where: Downtown Denton Square

So What? Stores and restaurants in downtown Denton will be open late for the monthly First Friday event. Sales, specials, and live music are all planned! This month, the DIME store will be helping visitors make their own journals for Mother’s Day

Denton Cinco de Mayo

May 2, 10-6 PM

Where: Quakertown Park

So What? The Denton Cinco de Mayo Celebration is about providing the spirit of celebration and friendship by sharing and showcasing rich cultural traditions, songs, dances, art exhibits and foods of the Hispanic Community. This Cinco de Mayo Celebration is a benefit to the Denton Community, because it is “THE” Hispanic event of the year.

National Day of Prayer

When: May 7, 12 -1 PM

Where: South Lawn, Courthouse-on-the-Square

So What?  Join millions of Americans in all 50 states to pray over our nation and its leaders. Pre-event music will start at 11:30 am by combined youth choirs and bands followed by a full program that will leave you encouraged and inspired. Seating provided. In case of inclement weather, event will be at Cross Timbers Community Church, 312 W. McKinney St (east of NorthStar Bank).

Raised Right Men

When: May 19, 7:00 PM

Where: Sweetwater Grill and Tavern, Denton TX

So What? The Raised Right Men are a honky-tonk five-piece band from Denton, TX.

With this many things going on in Denton this month, your schedule is going to be full. However, we can’t think of a better time to take a moment and enjoy all that our beautiful city has to offer.
