April Happenings

This month brings April showers, but hopefully not too many that your weekends are ruined! April comes with a host of activities to enjoy with your family. We’ve compiled a list of ones that are completely FREE. So check them out and let us know which ones you plan to attend!

Made in Denton County
When:
 Throughout April 2015
Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, 110 West Hickory Street

So What? Through the month of April, the Denton County Office of History and Culture is sponsoring “Made in Denton County”, a museum exhibit featuring products made here in Denton County! The way that a community’s identity and character are perceived can be strongly connected to what a place makes or produces. This exhibit will be provided in English and Spanish. A hands-on corner will provide children with tangible learning through interactive activities and creative play. The west gallery theater room will be screening various “How It’s Made” videos that feature the local companies in the exhibit.

So What? The 28th annual fine craft competition and exhibition is underway! The contest received a total of 592 pieces, but only 70 were chosen for the exhibition. This competition and ensuing exhibition still draws the attention of fans of contemporary craft across the country. In 2006, the Texas Commission on the Arts designated this show as a “must see” exhibition in Texas. It is one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country!

Watercolors by Dorothy Bertine
When: Throughout April 2015
Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, 110 West Hickory Street

So What? Dorothy Bertine, a native of Southern Oklahoma, is an artist known for her works in watercolor. Her art follows the California Watercolor School of painting developed in the first half of the 20th Century. Her studies in watercolor include nature scenes and historic houses. Dorothy Bertine received her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Texas Woman’s University and she resides in Denton. Her work is inspired by the architecture of the historic homes in Denton, and many of these artworks will be featured in this exhibit.

Wednesday Night Social Run
When:
 Wednesday evenings in April at 7 PM
Where: Oak St. Drafthouse, 308 East Oak Street

So What? A free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 6:45, and the run starts at 7:00. Join in on the fun! 

Adaptive Reuse Art Exhibition
When:
 April 1-3, 2015
Where: tAd Gallery, 901 Avenue C #101

So What? Denton’s tAd Gallery presents “Adaptive Reuse”, an exhibition featuring three local artists.

DentonRadio.com at LSA Burger
When:
 Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in April from 7-10 PM
Where: 113 West Hickory Street

So What? Local musicians perform at LSA Burger courtesy of DentonRadio.com every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Acts like Ellie Meyer, Ed Vargas, and more take the stage.

Jazz at the Whitehouse
When:
 Wednesdays in April from 8-10:30 PM
Where: 424 Bryan Street, Denton TX

So What? A different jazz artist performs every Wednesday evening at the Whitehouse. There is no cover charge for enjoying the great music.

Mariachi Quetzal
When:
 Friday evenings in April at 8 PM
Where: La Milpa, 820 S Interstate East

So What? A mariachi band performs every Friday night. There’s no cover charge. Enjoy the live music!

Denton Community Market
When:
 Saturdays in April from 9 AM-1 PM
Where: Denton County Historical Park, West Mulberry Street

So What? This weekly community market hosts local produce and art vendors as well as on-site food and music. Community groups and local businesses will also be present. More information is at dentonmarket.org

 Karma Yoga
 When:
 Sundays in April at 10 AM
Where: Audacity Brew House, 1012 Shady Oaks Drive

So What? Yoga fans of all levels are welcome to enjoy free yoga taught by teacher trainees and bring a canned good to benefit the Denton Community food Center.

April First Friday
When:
April 3 from 6-9 PM
Where: Downtown Denton Square

So What? Stores and restaurants in downtown Denton will be open late for the monthly First Friday event. Sales, specials, and live music are all planned!

Denton Independent Maker Exchange (DIME) Birthday Bash
When:
April 3 6-9 PM & 4 11 AM-6 PM
Where: The DIME Store, 510 S Locust St.

So What? The DIME Store is turning 2, and to celebrate, they’re giving away free treats and hosting free craft events. There will even be a photo booth! Makers at the bazaar will include Sew Lovely, Triple Threat Press, lemonGlaze and more.

Easter Egg Drop and Movie
When:
April 4, 6-9 PM
Where: 2900 Wind river Lane, #148

So What? Unicorn Lake is hosting an Easter egg drop, pet adoption fair, and a screening of the movie “Hop” to benefit the Eureka Park Rebuild project.

UNT Guitarkestra Jazz Guitar Ensemble
When:
April 6, 9 PM
Where: Kenton Hall, University of North Texas

So What? Come and enjoy a jazz guitar ensemble from the UNT College of Music. There is no cover charge.

UNT Vocal Jazz Ensemble
When:
April 7, 9 PM
Where: Kenton Hall, University of North Texas

So What? Come and enjoy a free concert from students with the UNT College of Music.

Food Truck Fest
When:
April 9, 3 PM
Where: 117 East Oak Street

So What? 9 or 10 food trucks, including the Waffle Wagon, Lean Machine and more will be at East Side Denton and Austin St. Truck Stop on April 9. This event is kid-friendly and dog-friendly! This annual event is free, and specials will be available all day.

Arts and Crafts Fair
When:  April 11, 2-6 PM
Where: 110 West Mulberry St., Denton

So What? Mulberry Street Cantina has an indoor arts and crafts fair every Saturday at 2 PM. Local vendors, artists, and crafters will be there!

Denton County Dash 5K Walk/Run
When: April 11, 9 AM
Where: 1301 South Railroad St., Lewisville TX

So What? The Denton County Dash is a free 5K Walk/Run to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease in Denton County. Free food, water, t-shirts, and entertainment will be provided. Walkers and runners of all ages and abilities are welcome!

UNT String Project Concert
When: April 15, 7:30 PM
Where: Murchison Performing Arts Center, University of North Texas

So What? UNT students show off their skills with string instruments with this free concert.

UNT University Day
When: April 17, 11 AM to 1:30 PM
Where: Onstead Promenade, UNT Campus

So What? Come learn about everything Denton and UNT have to offer! On- and off-campus organizations will be tabling, with food, fun, and activities. Last year over 5,000 people participated.

Twilight Tunes
When: Thursdays from April 23 to July 2, 6:30-8 PM
Where: Downtown Denton Courthouse on the Square

So What? Bring your friends and family, get a meal-to-go from one of the many downtown eateries, bring a blanket or chairs, and enjoy an evening of great live music as the sun sets over downtown Denton.  The 2015 series offers an eclectic assortment of music for all listeners.  Thursday Twilight Tunes is the perfect way to kick off the weekend early and listen to some of the best local bands in the Denton area.

Denton Arts and Jazz Festival
When: April 24-26
Where: Quakertown Park, Denton TX

So What?  Over 2,000 performers will appear on six stages during this annual three-day festival. There will also be a Children’s Art Tent, food, regional art vendors, and more!

Denton Business Expo
When: April 30, 3-6 PM
Where: Golden Triangle Mall

So What? The Denton Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual business expo at the Golden Triangle Mall. Attendance is free, and participating businesses will be providing giveaways and information. This is a great networking event!

With this many things going on in Denton this month, your schedule is going to be full. However, we can’t think of a better time to take a moment and enjoy all that our beautiful city has to offer.
