School is officially back in session, but that doesn't mean there is no fun to be had here in Denton.  Check out this month’s list of exciting and FREE events, and let us know which ones you plan to attend!

 

Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza

When: Saturday September 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Denton Square: 110 West Hickory Street

So What? The 15th annual Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza, presented by the Denton Main Street Association will feature live music, activities for kids, a chalk art fest, fine arts and crafts vendors, festival food, free antique appraisals and an auto show.

 

North Texas Giving Day: Denton County Rally

When: Thursday September 18 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Where: Denton Square: 110 West Hickory Street

So What? This year 83 Denton County nonprofits are participating in North Texas Giving Day. With the hopes of raising even more money and elevating awareness of the day in the county, Denton is hosting a North Texas Giving Day Donation Station event. The celebration will include music from Denton Radio, live entertainment from the Denton non-profit community, comments from city officials and special activities for children. On September 18, 2014, donations can be made 6 a.m. to midnight to more than 1,500 certified nonprofits listed on the new website www.northtexasgivingday.org. Donations $25 and above will be amplified by $2 million dollars in bonus funds and prizes.

 

NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass, & Kick

When: Thursday September 18 at 4:30 p.m.

Where: North Lakes Park: 2001 West Windsor Drive

So What? Each participant will perform one punt, one pass, and one kick. Scores are determined on distance and accuracy for the three events; winners are based on the highest cumulative score. There are five age groups: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15. The top five finishers in each sectional group will advance to the team championship at a Dallas Cowboys half-time event. The top four scorers in each team champion group will advance to the national finals at an NFL playoff game.

 

Denton Blues Fest

When: Saturday September 20 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Quaker Town Park: 321 East McKinney Street

So What? The Denton Black Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual Denton Blues Fest. There will be music for everyone, a Blues Idol contest and an Apollo Night for the youth.

 

Dog Days of Denton

When: Saturday September 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: North Texas State Fair Grounds: 2217 North Carroll Boulevard

So What? There is lots of fun to be had at Dog Days of Denton with many pup-friendly events such as, Canine Couture Costume Contest, Dancing with the Dog, How Obedient is Your Dog, Texas Heat Flyball, Dallas Dog n' Disc demonstrations, D.A.W.G agility course, Pet Tricks and Dog Singing contests. There will also be the popular Spokesdog Pageant (must be entered in advance--visit the Dog Days of Denton website for registration forms). Additionally, be sure and check out the hand-crafted arts and crafts for pets and people, pet care products and information, and general products and services for your home and pet. Attendees are welcome to bring pet food donations.

 

Greenfest

When: Sunday September 28 at 1 p.m.

Where: Greenbelt Park: 5900 Farm to Market 2181

So What? The family-friendly benefit event will celebrate the Lake Ray Roberts Greenbelt through outdoor activities, live music and food. Activities during the festival will include archery, rock climbing, kayaking, biking and geocaching. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Greenbelt Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Lake Ray Roberts Greenbelt in its present, scenic, natural state. Gates open at noon, activities begin at 1 p.m. and Brave Combo will begin performing at 2 p.m.

 

Yoga

When: Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Where: Banter: 219 West Oak Street

So What? Banter is offering free yoga classes every Saturday. Be sure and bring your own mat. Donations are welcome.

 

American Brides: Inspiration and Ingenuity

When: Tuesday through Saturday until October 24 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Patterson-Appleton Center for Visual Arts: 400 E. Hickory Street

So What? The exhibit features numerous dresses inspired by different periods of bridal fashion. On display will be authentic wedding dresses ranging from the Romantic, Victorian, Prohibition, Civil War eras, plus the Baby Boomer generation. 

 

Denton County Farmers’ Market

When: Weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to sellout

Where: Bayless-Selby House Museum Parking Lot: 317 West Mulberry Street

So What? Stop by and check out the selection of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers.

 

Denton Community Market

When: Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Historical Park of Denton County: 317 West Mulberry Street

So What? The Denton Community Market is an artist’s and farmer’s market that launched in April of 2010. The market features locally grown food, live music and activities for children. Visitors can also browse handmade items such as purses, jewelry and clothing that are for sale.

 

Denton Drum Circle

When: Every Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square: 110 West Hickory Street

So What? People are invited to come out and enjoy the music and culture of Denton at this family-friendly event featuring hand drumming.

 

Salsa Dancing

When: Every Tuesday from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Where: Mulberry Street Cantina: 110 W. Mulberry Street

So What? Mulberry Street Cantina offers free salsa dancing lessons to anyone interested. The lessons last until 9 p.m. and then there is an open dance floor with a DJ after the class ends.

 

Wednesday Night Social Run

When: Every Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

Where: Oak Street Draft House: 308 E. Oak Street

So What? The Wednesday Night Social Run is a free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m., and the run starts at 8:00 p.m. Join in on the fun and hang out for some beer and socializing after the run.

 

School may be in full swing, but we hope that you and your family take some time between the soccer practices, homework and violin lessons to get out and enjoy some of these exciting events going on in Denton this month!
