December Happenings

The holiday season is officially here and with it comes a host of activities to enjoy with your family. We’ve compiled a list of ones that are completely FREE. So check them out, and let us know which ones you plan to attend!

 

Art and Photography Show

When: December 2 to December 30

Where: A Creative Art STUDIO: 227 W. Oak St. #101

So What? Join us for our monthly art show with featured Artist Lily Mirsky. Originally from Riga, Latvia, Lily came to the USA in 1980 to pursue her dream of living in a free country. She feels that the art of presenting the beauty of the world through the eye of the camera has unlimited potential. Come see her beautiful photography and the art of over 60 local and regional artists. 

 

Photos with Santa

When: December 2 to December 24 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Sundays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.) Santa takes breaks from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Golden Triangle Mall: 2201 S. I-35 E

So What? Bring the kid’s to Santa’s Chalet at Center Court for a jolly holiday visit! It’s a memory they’ll cherish forever.

 

William Joyce Guardian of Childhood

When: Every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Meadows Gallery: 400 E. Hickory St.

So What? This incredible exhibit features the original works of William Joyce, the internationally acclaimed author, illustrator, filmmaker and animation pioneer. Over seventy of his original drawings, paintings and lithographs will be on display featuring work from his award winning creations including the Guardians of Childhood series, Meet the Robinsons, Epic, Rolie Polie Olie, Dinosaur Bob, Santa Calls and more!

 

First Friday Denton

When: Friday December 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: Denton Square: 110 W. Hickory St.

So What? First Friday is a monthly art walk that happens in downtown Denton. Many businesses are open late and host gallery openings, music, sales, and other family friendly fun.

 

Denton Holiday Lighting Festival

When: Friday December 5 from 5:30 p.m.to 9:30 p.m.

Where: Denton Square: 110 W. Hickory St.

So What? Capture the true spirit of a small-town holiday celebration at the 26th Annual Holiday Lighting Festival. The festival features performances by local bands and ensembles, carriage rides and photos with Santa.

 

Wassail Fest

When: Friday December 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday December 6 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Denton Square: 110 W. Hickory St.

So What? What is Wassail? Wassail is just a fussy old English name for hot cider. For 16 years now the downtown merchants have prepared old family favorite recipes to compete for the coveted title of Wassail King or Queen. Wassail tasting is free and for all ages.  Stroll through downtown and taste to find your favorite recipe.  Then be sure to cast your vote! Just pick up a ballot at any participating Wassail stop. Merchant participation will vary on each day. Ballots must be returned to any participating Wassail Stop before 6 p.m. on Saturday to be eligible for door prize drawings. So don’t forget to cast your vote!

 

Breakfast with Santa

When: December 6 at 9 a.m.

Where: Golden Triangle Mall Food Court: 2201 S. I-35 E

So What? Join Santa for Christmas crepes made specially for the Kid’s Club members by Monkey Crepe Cafe. Not a member? Sign up today at Guest Services. Membership is FREE and open to children ages 3 – 12 years old.

 

Irish Sessions

When: Saturday December 6 and 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Banter: 219 W. Oak St.

So What? Banter has Irish music every other Saturday! Come out and enjoy the music with a drink or some afternoon grub.

 

Salsa Dancing

When: Every Tuesday from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Where: Mulberry Street Cantina: 110 W. Mulberry Street

So What? Mulberry Street Cantina offers free salsa dancing lessons to anyone interested. The lessons last until 9 p.m. and then there is an open dance floor with a DJ after the class ends.

 

Wednesday Night Social Run

When: Every Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

Where: Oak Street Draft House: 308 E. Oak Street

So What? The Wednesday Night Social Run is a free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m., and the run starts at 8:00 p.m. Join in on the fun and hang out for some beer and socializing after the run.

 

With this many things going on in Denton this month, your schedule is going to be full. However, we can’t think of a better time to take a moment and enjoy all that our beautiful city has to offer.
