October Happenings

October is so packed full with fun and FREE events for the entire family that it may be difficult to keep track of them all. Luckily for you, we here at Interfaith have compiled a list of ones you should definitely check out. Which ones will you attend?

 

Up All Night

When: Friday October 3 from 5 p.m. to Saturday October 4 at 5 p.m.

Where: North Branch Library: 3020 North Locust Street

So What? Denton Public Library is hosting a 24-Hour Comics Day for adults age 18 and older, Oct. 3-4 at North Branch Library. This international event, sponsored by Comics Pro, invites individuals and teams to create a 24-page comic in 24 hours. It aims to provide a social, supportive atmosphere for veteran and novice artists and writers. The event will be held simultaneously with the Better Denton Hackathon, in which participants will work for as long as 24 hours on a project of their choosing that they believe will make Denton a better place.

 

Costume Recycle

When: Every Saturday October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Denton Community Market: 317 West Mulberry Street

So What? Costumes can be stressful and expensive. This year we’re going to help families in need with our first ever Costume Recycle! Oct 4, 11, 18, & 25 we’ll help you create something amazing!

 

Free Movie in the Park

When: Friday October 10 at 7 p.m.

Where: Quakertown Park:

So What? Wear your favorite "Frozen" outfit or costume and come out to watch "Frozen!" We'll make Olaf s'mores before the movie! At 7 p.m. there will be crafts and the marshmallow roast and the movie will begin at 8 p.m. Bring the family and pack up the lawn chairs and blankets for these delightful animated movies.

 

Barktoberfest

When: Saturday October 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: North Lakes Park: 2001 West Windsor Drive

So What? This event is sponsored by the Denton Human Society and will include a DJ/music, food, low-cost vaccinations, microchipping, shopping, pet contests, a rescue parade, pet pics, raffles, paw prints, rescue groups and more!!  All proceeds will benefit local animals in need.

 

Song & Story

When: Friday October 17 from 8 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Where: Banter: 219 West Oak Street

So What? Every third Friday Banter has Song & Story, which features four of the best singer songwriters in the DFW area perform on stage telling stories behind the songs they write. It is a two hour song swap.

 

Halloween Harvest

When: Friday October 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: Denia Recreation Center: 1001 Parvin Street

So What? Come out for the Halloween Harvest at Denia Recreation Center! There will be carnival games, bounce houses, black light games, rock climbing and more! There will also be a costume competition with winners in different categories, including best baby, best toddler, best youth, best family, and overall most creative. So come on out and enjoy the fun!

 

Halloween Carnival

When: Saturday October 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Where: MLK Jr. Rec Center: 1300 Wilson Street

So What? Enjoy free carnival games, goodie bag, face painting, bounce houses, concessions, a costume contest, and more. Costume judging will begin at 10:30 a.m., and awards will be given at 11:30 for the best baby, best youth, and best adult costume. Families will be able to take pictures in the Haunted Courtyard, so bring a camera!

 

Day of the Dead Festival

When: Saturday October 25 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Where: Hickory and Industrial Streets

So What? Arts and crafts as well as food and drink vendors will line the streets. Children will have many activities to choose from, such as trunk or treating and their very own “Pumpkin Patch,” full of many activities and games. There will also be a salsa cook-off, music & dancing, street performers and side show entertainers, Denton’s original Halloween Cabaret “Cirque du Horror,” as well as Denton’s very own Coffin Races and a lantern-lit twilight parade all help make this event truly magical, and one you won’t soon forget!

 

Denton Halloween Costume Bike Ride

When: Friday October 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square: 110 West Hickory Street

So What? Join the Denton Green Mile for a bike ride around town! Along with the Costume Bike Ride will be the Festival of Lanterns.

 

Yoga

When: Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Where: Banter: 219 West Oak Street

So What? Banter is offering free yoga classes every Saturday. Be sure and bring your own mat. Donations are welcome.

 

American Brides: Inspiration and Ingenuity

When: Tuesday through Saturday until October 24 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Patterson-Appleton Center for Visual Arts: 400 E. Hickory Street

So What? The exhibit features numerous dresses inspired by different periods of bridal fashion. On display will be authentic wedding dresses ranging from the Romantic, Victorian, Prohibition, Civil War eras, plus the Baby Boomer generation. 

 

Denton County Farmers’ Market

When: Weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to sellout

Where: Bayless-Selby House Museum Parking Lot: 317 West Mulberry Street

So What? Stop by and check out the selection of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers.

 

Denton Community Market

When: Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Historical Park of Denton County: 317 West Mulberry Street

So What? The Denton Community Market is an artist’s and farmer’s market that launched in April of 2010. The market features locally grown food, live music and activities for children. Visitors can also browse handmade items such as purses, jewelry and clothing that are for sale.

 

Denton Drum Circle

When: Every Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square: 110 West Hickory Street

So What? People are invited to come out and enjoy the music and culture of Denton at this family-friendly event featuring hand drumming.

 

Salsa Dancing

When: Every Tuesday from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Where: Mulberry Street Cantina: 110 W. Mulberry Street

So What? Mulberry Street Cantina offers free salsa dancing lessons to anyone interested. The lessons last until 9 p.m. and then there is an open dance floor with a DJ after the class ends.

 

Wednesday Night Social Run

When: Every Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

Where: Oak Street Draft House: 308 E. Oak Street

So What? The Wednesday Night Social Run is a free 5k group run through Denton. Runners of all levels and abilities are welcome. The group meets at Oak Street Draft House every Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m., and the run starts at 8:00 p.m. Join in on the fun and hang out for some beer and socializing after the run.

 

We weren't lying when we said there was a lot going on this month in Denton. Take some time from your busy schedule and get out and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!
