They say April showers bring May flowers, and while we can’t guarantee you any flowers, we can guarantee that Denton has some pretty great events going on this month. So, take some time to stop and smell the roses this May. Oh, and as always, all of the events listed are COMPLETELY FREE.

Twilight Tunes
When: Every Thursday in May from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square: 110 West Hickory Street
So What? Sponsored by the Denton Main Street Association, this award-winning concert series takes place every Thursday from the end of April to the beginning of July.  Listeners are encouraged to bring their own meal and a blanket or chairs, and enjoy an evening of great live music as the sun sets over downtown Denton.  The 2014 series offers an eclectic assortment of music for all listeners. Below is a list of this month’s artists and their genres.
May 1:  Los Patos Poderosos - Chicha
May 8: The Bird Dogs - Country
May 15: The Poor Kings - Singer Songwriter/Pop

Denton County Farmers’ Market
When: Weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to sellout
Where: Bayless-Selby House Museum Parking Lot: 317 West Mulberry Street
So What? Stop by and check out the selection of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers.

Free Comic Book Day
When: Saturday May 3, all day
Where: More Fun Comics and Games: 103 West Hickory Street
So What? More Fun Comics and Games invites you to come and join in on Free Comic Book Day. Join other comic book fans in a celebration of pop culture.

Denton Cinco de Mayo
When: Saturday May 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Quakertown Park: 321 East McKinney Street
So What? The 27th annual Denton Cinco de Mayo Celebration provides the spirit of celebration and friendship by sharing and showcasing rich cultural traditions, songs, dances, art exhibits and foods of the Hispanic Community. The event’s parade begins at 10 a.m. in the Texas Woman’s University parking lot, proceeds down Elm St. to the Courthouse-on-the-Square, around Quakertown Park and ends at the Denton Civic Center parking lot. Additionally, there will be children’s arts and crafts, food, entertainment, the Little Miss Cinco de Mayo pageant and more.

Denton Community Market
When: Every Saturday in May from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Historical Park of Denton County: 317 West Mulberry Street
So What? The Denton Community Market is an artist’s and farmer’s market that launched in April of 2010. The market features locally grown food, live music and activities for children. Visitors can also browse handmade items such as purses, jewelry and clothing that are for sale.

Denton Drum Circle
When: Every Saturday in May from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Where: Courthouse-on-the-Square: 110 West Hickory Street
So What? People are invited to come out and enjoy the music and culture of Denton at this family-friendly event featuring hand drumming.

Concerts on the Square
When: Every Wednesday in May from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Downtown Courthouse Square: 110 West Hickory Street
So What? Come out and enjoy some music during you lunch hour. Visitors are encouraged to bring their lunch and have a picnic on the Courthouse lawn. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Denton Civic Center. Artists for this month are listed below.

Movies in the Park After Dark
When: Friday May 9 and May 16 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Where: Quakertown Park: 321 East McKinney Street
So What? Experience an outdoor movie with family and friends. An open-fire marshmallow roast and children’s crafts start at 8 p.m. The movie will start at 9 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs. Low-priced concessions and glow sticks will be sold. The May 9 movie is “Planes” and the May 16 movie is “Despicable Me 2.”

As you can see Denton has a lot going on this month, and if these events don’t get you excited for May, we don’t know what will. So take a little time to relax and enjoy all that our community has to offer.
